Shingo, un vieil homme d’affaires, ressent une profonde affection pour sa belle-fille Kikuko, qui se consacre à son mari et à ses beaux-parents. Le jeune couple n’a pas d’enfants, et ses relations sont instables. Le jour où la jeune femme se trouve enceinte, elle décide de ne pas mettre l’enfant au monde, remettant son mariage en question.
